Kathryn Wheeler holds a Master of Arts from the College of Charleston and currently teaches third grade at Mars Hill Academy in Mason, OH. Since her first exposure to the beauty and efficacy of classical, Christian education, Mrs. Wheeler has been involved in the promotion of this Christ-centered method of learning as both a parent and a teacher for over a decade. Whether instructing her students in the art of grammar, or shaping their affections for great books, Mrs. Wheeler daily delights in her calling to teach children to use language to the glory of God. She particularly loves teaching at Mars Hill because of the collective effort among the teachers to disciple the heart of every student. Kathryn and her husband, Paul, have five children and are active members in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
This workshop is designed to instruct grammar school teachers in applying John Milton Gregory’s The Seven Laws of Teaching to every lesson plan. Teachers will receive guidance on how to maintain student attention, use classroom manipulatives to create a shared vocabulary, and make lessons interactive — boosting both student delight and curiosity while assessing mastery.
This session highlights the principle of ‘repetitio mater memoriae’ by showing teachers how to inculcate into every lesson an intentional review that promotes student mastery of previously learned concepts. It also highlights the necessity for ‘festina lente,’ as memory mastery takes time and must precede a careful scaffolding of additional concepts. Teachers will leave the session with a detailed outline for creating effective, classical lessons according to John Milton Gregory’s The Seven Laws of Teaching. They will also have a list of practical activities and manipulatives to increase student engagement in learning and assess student mastery.
