Elemental Meaning: Teaching Euclid Dialectically

Plato’s Academy famously forbade entry to any who had not “mastered geometry.” This workshop explores the patterns of deeper meaning in Euclid’s Elements Books I and III, demonstrating methods for approaching the three fundamental aspects of ancient Geometry: axiomata, construction, and demonstration.

Benefits & Takeaways

I believe that mathematics is an underappreciated field in classcial education generally. I am a philosophy and lit teacher by passion and trade, but one for whom Euclid has been a thirty year “love.” As such, I think I can bridge the gap and help reclaim mathematics from the “immanent frame” ( cf Taylor) in which it has been mired since the Enlightenment. I bring 28 years’ teaching experience to this task, and am the prime architect of our school’s present Euclid course. I want to show our conference attendees that The Elements is Everyman’s mathematics.
